Discovery

Finding new images inside material already worked over once or twice. Revisiting August 23rd at Natural Chimneys, above, and September 28th at the Hardware River Wildlife Management Area below.

No Fish in Here

Made an executive decision and decided to burn half a day fishing today. Got up at 5 and headed to the Hardware River Wildlife Management Area (on the James River) and got on the water just before dawn. This was a kind of big event because it was the first time I ever took my dog fishing with me. She did very well in the boat for a non-water dog. My only regret was that I did not catch a fish today. I really wanted to show the dog a live fish, so she would understand why we were out in the boat for so long. All I caught were some photos:

There is nothing quite like being out on the river at dawn, before the fog burns off for the day.

Cyclopean Towers

These photos are from a little side trip I took while returning home from West Virginia on August 23rd. These days this place is called Natural Chimneys Regional Park, but I prefer some of the historical names it has been known by in the past, such as “Vulcan’s Forge” and the “Cyclopean Towers.”

The park is pretty tacky, and they even put a big message board sign right in front of the chimneys. I photoshopped the  sign out of the picture above.

If you walk around the park a bit, you can find some smaller chimneys that have not been subjected to the fencing, signing or landscaping that detract from the big chimneys.

…and along the park trails, I even found some of the usual suspects lurking about.

The tacky park development does have some charm. There’s even an un-natural chimney that provides contrast to the natural ones.

…and the site has one of the nicest entry signs I’ve seen.

Another Fine Roadside Specimen

Roadside Rootballs of McDowell, Virginia

I’ve been traveling to West Virginia and back a lot lately for work and, naturally, I keep an eye out for rootballs (doesn’t eveybody?) I photographed the one above, today, in the town of McDowell, Virginia. I spotted the one below as I passed through the same area back on August 23rd.
